Punta Del Este, Uruguay

This was my first stop in Uruguay. It is an upscale beach resort on the Atlantic coast. Most of the city is located on a very narrow peninsula, about a mile long and ½ mile wide which extends south into the Atlantic ocean. Lots of modern high-rise buildings on this narrow slice of land and everything was within a short walk. They have a great marina in the city containing lots of expensive yachts.

I found a hotel only a few blocks from the bus station which was a few hundred meters away from the beach. It was only $35 per night (US).

In the restaurants, I learned that one of the Uruguian national meals is “Chivito”, which are glorified steak sandwiches with lots of condiments – they were delicious and fairly cheap.

My first day was chilly, and I was wearing my jacket most of the day. The second day was nice and warm and sunny, and I got to enjoy the beach and sun. The water was a bit too cold for swimming - the surfers all were wearing wetsuits. The third day started out rainy and cloudy, so in the morning I hopped one of the frequent buses to the capital, Montevideo.
